FAQ

Microneedling

Microneedling is a minimally invasive procedure that uses fine needles to create controlled micro-injuries in the skin, stimulating natural collagen and elastin production. It improves skin texture, reduces scarring, fine lines, pigmentation, and enlarged pores.

Collagen and elastin production continue actively for 2 to 6 weeks after a single session. Full collagen maturation can take up to 3 months, during which the skin becomes firmer, more elastic, and smoother.

Between 3 and 6 sessions are typically recommended, spaced 4-6 weeks apart, depending on your skin condition and treatment goals.

Most people experience mild discomfort, described as a tingling sensation. Anaesthetic cream is not routinely used, and the treatment intensity can be adjusted based on individual sensitivity.

Skin sensitivity peaks within the first 3-7 days. Redness and discomfort gradually subside during this period. Complete skin recovery, including collagen restructuring, may take up to 4-6 weeks.

Minor side effects such as redness, mild inflammation, and a sensation of tight skin may occur immediately after the procedure. These symptoms usually resolve within a few days.

Avoid using retinoids and acids (AHA/BHA) for 7-10 days after treatment, as they can irritate the sensitive skin.

Avoid wearing makeup for at least 24-48 hours to reduce the risk of irritation or infection. Ideally, it’s best to avoid makeup for up to two weeks to allow full skin recovery.

Yes, microneedling is safe for all skin types, including darker skin tones, as it does not affect the outer layer of the skin (epidermis).

Results appear gradually, with initial improvements visible after 4 weeks. Skin continues to improve for 2-3 months post-treatment as collagen matures. Repeated treatments enhance long-term effects.

What Happens After Microneedling?

Micro-injuries trigger an immune response. The body sends repair cells to the treated areas to prevent infection and start healing. Redness, warmth, and mild swelling are common.

Skin cells regenerate, and fibroblasts produce new collagen and elastin. Skin texture gradually improves, and minor flaking may occur.

Newly formed collagen fibres strengthen and organise, resulting in firmer, more resilient skin. Elasticity and tone improve.

When Is Microneedling Not Recommended?

Herpes simplex (cold sores), severe acne, or bacterial/fungal infections can worsen with microneedling.

Microneedling on open cuts or sores increases the risk of infection and further injury.

Treating active, inflamed acne can worsen the condition and increase the risk of scarring.

Microneedling is not recommended if isotretinoin has been used within the last 6-12 months.

These inflammatory conditions can flare up after microneedling.

Due to hormonal changes that affect skin sensitivity and healing, consult a specialist if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

People prone to keloid or hypertrophic scars may be at risk of abnormal scar formation after microneedling.

Deep chemical peels or laser treatments require full skin recovery before microneedling.

Conditions like lupus or rheumatoid arthritis may impair healing, making microneedling risky.

Impaired wound healing in diabetes increases the risk of complications.

Conditions affecting blood clotting increase the risk of excessive bleeding and bruising.

Sunburned or UV-damaged skin is more prone to irritation and inflammation after microneedling.

Microneedling should not be performed on areas with known or suspected skin cancer.

Wait 2 weeks after botox or filler treatments to avoid interference with their settling process.

People on immunosuppressive drugs may experience slower healing and increased risk of infection.

Post-Treatment Recommendations

Apply SPF 50+ sunscreen and stay away from direct sunlight for several days post-treatment.

Wash and disinfect your hands thoroughly before touching your face.

Use disposable paper towels instead of regular towels to prevent contamination.

Use a clean pillowcase to reduce the risk of infection or irritation.

Prevent skin irritation by wearing comfortable, light-coloured clothing.

Keep your hands away from your face to minimise the risk of infection.

Use a fragrance-free, gentle moisturiser to keep your skin hydrated.

Avoid retinoids, exfoliants, and acids for 7-10 days.

Avoid saunas, hot baths, and heavy sweating for the first few days after treatment.

Drink plenty of water to support your skin’s healing process.
